Heart Update

Just wanted to give y'all an update on the heart. I went in for my appointment with the cardiologist today. I explained to him what I had felt on Sunday and what the ER doctor had determined, etc. They did another EKG on me there in the office, which turned up several more PVCs (even though I wasn't feeling them happen). The doctor didn't seem concerned at all. He said PVCs are a very benign condition and nothing that I should be alarmed about. He said if I felt them again the way I did on Sunday, I should probably call and they could have me take home a heart monitor type thing that would monitor me from home. Then, on what seemed like a side thought, he ordered an ultrasound of my heart. So I went with the ultrasound tech lady to the next room and awkwardly stripped down my top half (it felt like having a baby all over again... no privacy) :) and she did the ultrasound. I went back into my room and waited for the doc. This time when he came in, he sat down and said it was time for an anatomy lesson. I just looked at him like, "uh... is there something I should know??" He went on to explain that when you're a fetus in the womb, there's a hole in between your two atriums in the heart (so that the blood will bypass the undeveloped lungs). When you're born, that hole usually closes/fuses within a few months. But there are two things that can happen. One is that the flaps come together, but leave a hole (Atrial Septal Defect-ASD). The other is that they can come together but the flaps don't fuse (Patent Foramen Ovale-PFO). He said I have a PFO. (insert 'wide-eyed stare at the doctor' here). He explained that a PFO is still nothing to really be worried about. It may be an issue if I ever tried to do deep-sea diving or something like that, but most people (and it's common in about 20% of the people) never have an issue. However, he said that he couldn't rule out that I don't have a hole in that wall, which is something that would need to fixed.
SO... to make a long story longer, what this means is that I get to go back to the hospital in 2 weeks for a small outpatient procedure in which they will stick a tube in me to go look at my heart and see exactly what the situation is. They won't have to knock me out, but I'll be sedated... so Jim gets to come with me, since I won't be able to drive afterward. :) And then, based on what they see or don't see, I will either be able to go on my merry way, or be scheduled to have a hole in my heart fused together.
Either way, it's still nothing to lose sleep over. There's a simple procedure to fix the hole if it comes to that (they used to have to do open heart surgery, but now they can just do some simple procedure by going through your leg/groin area and up to the heart... I love modern medicine) but all is well and we're doing good. :)
So anyway...  it's not quite the news I was expecting, but that's okay. I'll be sure to keep you posted. :) Hope y'all are doing great!

Debbie! I've been reading your blog the past few months and I don't think I've commented yet :) So I'm a Cardiac ICU nurse and I take care of patients getting these done (angiogram or cardiac catheterization) all the time! It's usually pretty uncomplicated and a pretty routine procedure. They'll keep you comfortable during the procedure, you'll be on bedrest for a few hours after you get back to the room, and then you'll probably get to go home! Easy!
I'm sad yall couldn't come to the reunion so I could meet your hubby and girls! Let me know if you have any questions!

I had a friend here that just had something similiar, and it was her last pregnancy they think that initiated it, even though it was a condition she always had. I'm glad that it's nothing more serious, but you will still be in my thoughts and prayers.

Adrienne had this happening to her shortly after she had Noah. She had to wear the heart monitor for several days. She has PVC's also. It gave her quite the scare.

So glad you "have a heart"!! :-) In all seriousness, I am glad they figured out what was causing this scare. Take care of yourself, missy!

I'm glad things are fine and shouldn't cause problems. You seem so carefree about everything which is good. I have an irregular heart beat and sometimes have problems in high altitude but they say I don't have a heart murmur so that's good, but I've always wanted to figure out what's going on. Good thing you did.
Your girls are adorable. I love the naked cowgirl picture, haha. I'm impressed that Summer was counting at 18 mos, that's cool.

Debs, These things are always a little nerve racking, but I know you'll make it through. You're one of the strongest people I know spiritually and mentally. You're in our prayers. Love you girl!
