Saturday Family Work Project

Saturday Work Project: Shore Up Our Foundation
The Goal: To fill in the space under our home's foundation that has opened up due to the drought

This is what happens when a usually rainy place (like the Houston area) with clay soil (like the Houston area) ends up in the worst drought it has seen since the 1910's (like the Houston area):

Yup... that's the foundation of our house and our driveway... with massive gaps underneath. The ground has severely shrunken and pulled away from the foundation. You can just reach your hand right under there and feel the bottom of your own home. Strange. And scary! This has happened in several areas around our home and all along the driveway. So yesterday found us with a truckload of sand and a whole lot of water to fill in some of the gaps... literally. It was a long process of dumping sand and then using the water to guide the sand and allow it to flow into the needed areas. A lot of people in our area (or at least the smart ones) are having to do this in order to prevent the foundations from cracking. Our driveway has already split down the middle on one of the slabs, but we're hoping to avoid any further problems. We'll probably have to do another load of sand at some point as we didn't quite fill it all in with what we had. But that's another day. :)

...Who needs a beach when you've got Daddy's truck?!...
