Dixie's Big Boo Boo

Well, Dixie managed to be the first in our family to break a bone. She wins the bragging rights. :)

How did this happen? Well... she was playing baseball in the backyard with Daddy and she was running around the bases, when she slipped? tripped? we're not really sure... but regardless... she fell... on her arm... and broke it. (Although we didn't know that right away.)
I heard the immediate wailing and came hustling out of the house, but it's always hard to tell the extent of any damage with this child based on her crying because, well, let's face it... she's a bit of a drama queen and tends to cry over a lot of things. (Sorry Dixie, but it's true.) But I checked her arm for any obvious signs of a break and didn't feel anything unusual so Jim and I weren't really thinking there was a serious problem.
We decided to just keep an eye on her and headed in the house for dinner. The real hint of a problem came when she actually stopped whining about it, and was just very protective of her arm. The fact that she WASN'T being drama about it and just wanted everyone to leave it alone told me there might actually be a real problem.
Jim and I both agreed, so he took her off to the Urgent Care right up the road from us. They took an x-ray, determined there was no break, but put a hard splint on (kind of like half a cast wrapped in an ace bandage) and then referred us to an orthopedic doc to make sure there was no bleeding at the growth plates.
Well, I wasn't so sure that I wanted to take her to another doctor to have more bills as 'just a precautionary' if everything was fine, so I called my brother-in-law, Steve (an ER doctor), to get his opinion on it. He said that if they were concerned about possible bleeding in the growth plates that he would recommend still going to see the orthopedic doctor because that could cause stunted bone growth.
SO... not wanting to be responsible for my daughter having a gimpy arm five years down the road or anything, I decided to do the follow-up. That all happened on a Wednesday (Oct. 3rd to be precise). :) So on Thursday, I made the appointment for the ortho doc for the next day (Friday). They told me at that time that I'd need to bring my xray from the Urgent Care in with me (and emphasized the importance of having it), so I called the Urgent Care to make sure I could get a copy, and all was well. I would stop by sometime that day, or at the very worst, have Jim pick it up on his way home from work.
WELL... as life would have it, things started getting crazy. Jim had invited a family over to dinner for that evening (he had kept feeling like he needed to do it and FINALLY had done it), and I had to make a run to the store for some of the items needed, but then I ran out of time to do that AND go pick up the xray AND make it home in time before Dixie got off the bus (I have to be there for them to let her off the bus, otherwise they'll take her back to the school), so I figured Jim would have to pick up the xray on his way home.
BUT... Jim ended up coming home later than usual (would you believe that a co-worker was having a mini bridal shower type thing that day after school and Jim had actually forgotten about needing to get home because we were having company over and he was in charge of BBQing??) So, he couldn't pick the xray up right then, but we figured, not a problem... they're open until 8PM, so we'll just go after company leaves. BUT dinner didn't get prepared until way late (due to someone getting home extra late and then trying to start a fire in the pit with wet wood...) so dinner went way late and company didn't leave until 8PM. Okay. So. No big deal. Dixie's dr appt was at 9:30AM, so I would just swing by on my way to her appt and pick up the xray in the morning. Off to bed we go.
Friday morning. Get the troops ready, (Dixie's excited she gets to miss school for this) we're actually ready early (a minor miracle), so I leave with plenty of time to go grab that stinkin xray, pull into the parking lot... and... they're closed. They don't open until 10AM. Of course. No one has an urgent care need before 10AM. I DO!!! I NEED THAT XRAY!!! What now? So I call the ortho doc and they said that they would have to take new xrays then and we would just have to pay for them because insurance wouldn't pay for two sets.

Whatever.

So, feeling like I was being punished for having had this family over to dinner (we would have had PLENTY of time to get that xray if we hadn't had that going on), I begrudgingly headed off to Dixie's appointment. I filled out the mountain of paperwork, signed my life away, and Dixie got her new xrays.
Well, wouldn't ya know... the new xrays showed a break in the bone. The dr assumed we knew it was broken, but I explained we had been told it was NOT broken. He just smiled and said that's why they refer to the orthopedic specialists. {Side note: I felt sufficiently humbled for begrudging the time we'd spent with the family that had caused us to have to get new xrays. Perhaps we were actually being watched out for all along and needed the new xrays to be taken in order to show the break. Yet again, just another evidence of the Lord watching out for us.}
So... Dixie got to pick her favorite color, the doctor quickly and efficiently casted her arm in pink, and there you have it! An arm in a cast for 4-6 weeks. Oh. And did I mention that we had to hustle home to pack because we were headed to the Austin area (we were supposed to leave around noon... so much for that!) for Jim to go run in a Tough Mudder competition the next morning? No? Must have slipped my mind amid all the INSANITY OF MY LIFE!!! :) (P.S. More on the Tough Mudder to come.) :)

Anyway... here's some more pictures of our casted cutie:
 {These are actually from the first night... with just the splint... when we thought it WASN'T broken}

 I call this one "Poised in Pink" :)

 Enjoying a fun family dessert night at Menchie's Frozen Yogurt... nothing keeps this girl down.

And Summer has been a good support system and not too terribly jealous of all the attention Dixie has been getting. :)

On to more adventures! The journey never ends. :) Loves!! :)

Btw - Madelyn was very concerned when she heard about Dixie breaking her arm. I'll have to show her these pictures in the morning so that she can see Dixie is happy in her pink cast. Also, we love menchies!

Holy drama. Yikes. Glad you all survived! And you should try to see if the first doctors office will eat the cost of those x-rays since they weren't even done right in the first place! Just a thought:) And tell Dixie we think he cast is adorable:) Oh and I'm totally jealous that Jim got to do a tough mudder. We did the mud run and loved it. Tough mudder might be in our future plans:) Excited to hear how it went! Love you!
